Education in the Philippines is free and compulsory for children of ages 7 through 12 (up to at least the sixth grade). Teachers in the public elementary schools conduct classes in the local dialect for the first two years and then introduce English and Pilipino.

Schools are classified into public (government) or private (non-government). Most of the private schools teach in English. The high schools and universities mostly use English.
