Lost!

It was the last day of the year 2002. My parents brought my brother and me to Sentosa to join the crowd in the countdown for the new year. We were so excited that we fidgeted in the car. This was the first time we had ever been to Sentosa to join in the countdown. There was a long traffic jam. At the entrance, we waited for a long time. There was tight security as they were afraid of terrorists. Finally, we went in.

I estimated that there were twenty thousand or more people at the Siloso Beach. We were packed like canned sardines. All the party-goers blew their whistles and shouted. We were jostled and pushed about. I held onto my father's hand tightly for fear of being lost.

I looked up but to my horror, I found myself holding a stranger's hand! I was horrified. I looked around but my family was not in sight. Fear gripped my heart as I was all alone.

I released my hold of the stranger's hand and started searching. I was frantic. I pushed my way through but I thought I would never find my family on this crowded beach. I started sobbing. I thought, "Mum, dad, brother, where are you?" I started searching again as I walked among the crowd.

Just as I was about to give up hope and wait for my family to find me, I spotted them. I wondered if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I rubbed my eyes. Yes, it was really them! I ran towards them and shouted, "Mum, dad, brother!" They turned around. When they saw me, they ran towards me and hugged me tightly. I was so happy to find my family. At that time, the countdown started, "10, 9, 8, 7, ......" We also started to count with the crowd. The countdown ended with a colourful display of fireworks. We were very happy as we had found one another.
