An Accident

It was a cool and breezy Friday afternoon. My friend, Tom, and I chatted happily as we strolled leisurely to school.

Suddenly, Tom remembered that he had to be in school early to do his prefect duty. He took a glance at his watch and realized that he was late!

As the overhead bridge was quite a distance away, Tom did not want to waste time using the bridge. Instead, he suggested that we jaywalk across the road so as to save time. Shocked, I told him it was a dangerous thing to do as the traffic was very heavy.

However, Tom did not heed my advice and he dashed across the busy road without even looking out for vehicles. Just then, a car, which was traveling at full speed, came around the bend. I shouted out for Tom to stop but it was futile. I heard the screeching of brakes as the driver tried to swerve, but it was too late!

The next thing I saw made me gasp in horror. Tom was lying in a pool of blood, unconscious. His head was pinned under the rear wheel of the car and many passers-by shook their heads in disbelief. The traffic slowed down to a crawl and many curious motorists craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the accident.

Panic-stricken, I ran as fast as a bullet to the nearest telephone to call for an ambulance.

Shortly after, the police officers and an ambulance arrived at the scene. Two paramedics sprang into action. They put Tom on a stretcher, carried him into the ambulance and rushed him to the hospital.

Unfortunately, Tom did not pull through. He died without regaining consciousness. His parents were heart-broken and they cried their hearts out.

This accident will be etched in my mind forever for I had lost a best friend ...
