THE STORY

One day in 1977, my wife said that she had to do an assignment on web pages (see first para in white below). I said, "I don't know how to do it!" So off to the National Library and I came home with a yellow dummy book. Using Netscape 3, we whipped out the following pages. Netscape 3 was pretty easy to use ... though the html coding was not compact.

The pages were first hosted at GeoCities ... it's free. The URL was http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/2200/ also known as http://www.geocities.com/buildnextgen/ When the pages were uploaded, broken links were revealed. I'm grateful to the person who helped to troubleshoot and encouraged me to develop the site ... your email is something like leader@gte.net

More books on web design, html coding, usability, Javascript, etc were consulted. The section on "Blessed to be a Blessing" and others were added. The site's name was changed from "Building the Next Generation" to "Parenting the Next Generation" because visitors were confused as the former was also the name of my book on dramatized family devotions for preschoolers and early primaries.

I spent hours searching GeoCities and the entire web for sites with similar contents and asking for links. On the site's first anniversary, I held a contest - a free giveaway of 10 copies of my book - to increase the site's popularity. As the site grew, it was rewarded with the title "GeoCities Featured Page" and additional disk storage of 3 MB was given - that's huge - more than sufficient. But as the site continues to grow especially in popularity, a problem arose in 2001.
Congratulations, "Parenting the Next Generation" is very popular and has been receiving a large amount of traffic. Your site has become so popular, in fact, that our records indicate that you're using more than the allotted amount of data transfer we provide for a free web site, which is 3 GB (gigabytes) per month (measured on an hourly basis). That means at some time during the past few days we had to turn your site off until the usage fell within the prescribed limit.
This was a consistent problem and the site's unavailability frustrated a number of my regular visitors especially schools who were using some of the pages for computer lab time. In December 2002, the site was moved to a new home ... I just had to pay for hosting.

Building the Next Generation

These are the (potential) home web pages of Kow Hui Meng from the tutorial group that meets on Wednesday 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. They are submitted in fulfillment for the requirements of NED 503 and are for the eyes of Mrs Nancy Harkrider. Enjoy yourself !

These pages will be dedicated to the parents of preschoolers and primary school children. It is my hope that parents will find them beneficial in the nurturing and building of their next generation. This site will assist parents who have questions about the primary school education system in Singapore. The articles and shareware will help parents to cultivate children's interest in learning.
