The Mountains
Unlike animals, plants do not eat; they make their own food through a process called "photosynthesis". During this process, the leaves use SUNLIGHT, carbon dioxide and water to make food. Plants need sunlight to survive.
If you climb from the base to the top of a MOUNTAIN, you will pass through a number of different types of plant community. It gets colder & colder as you climb higher and the trees eventually thin out & disappear.
Plants in high MOUNTAIN regions are slow growers. They build up food stores in their roots in summer to survive the cold winter. In spring, the plants burst briefly into flower, attracting birds and insects.
